DESCRIPTION

Pathology is the essence of medicine. It is the study of disease, their cause, symptoms and diagnosis. Broadly speaking this subject deals with derangements of tissue structure and function in disease, related with clinical signs and symptoms. General Pathology deals with general reaction and response of a cell and tissue to pathologic stimuli causing disease. Subject of Pathology includes four basic disciplines; Histopathology, Microbiology and Immunology, Hematology and Chemical Pathology.. Microbiology is the study of microorganisms which are the most common cause of disease in developing countries, and so are the parasites. Hematology deals with the diseases affecting blood and its components and includes blood transfusion. Chemical Pathology is an important discipline in clinical practice and deals with abnormalities of metabolism, endocrines etc. and the chemical changes, which occurs in the different systems in the diseases and their diagnosis in the laboratory, are discussed and learned. Further subdivisions and subspecialties are dealt under any one of the said disciplines. General Pathology with Microbiology and Parasitology is taught in the second academic year of BDS course. Special Pathology, Hematology and others are taught during the same year.

An excellent museum with precious specimens is provided besides a fully functional diagnostic laboratory which is working at BDMC, encompassing all the above said disciplines, under guidance of renowned pathologists of Pakistan. The department is headed by a renowned professor of Pathology and has qualified faculty members.
