Medical Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes occurring in human body. It deals with the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules. The main focus of Medical Biochemistry is in understanding how biological molecules give rise to the processes that occur within living cells which in turn relates greatly to the study and understanding of whole organisms. It begins with an introduction to the principles of the science and the structure and function of the various chemical elements that constitute living cells. Medical Biochemistry has uncovered the molecular evidences of almost all the diseases to-date.
It not only helps to understand the disease better but also provides the methods and tools for accurate diagnosis of the diseases which assist further treatment plans. Practical exercises in the laboratory form an essential mode of instruction. These are designed to illustrate concepts discussed in the class room and to introduce methods of biochemical analysis by various techniques used for separation, identification, and measurement of biomolecules relevant to clinical sciences.
