The goals for the Department of Periodontology are to provide dental students with a high quality education, cultivate their abilities to provide evidence based periodontal treatment to their patients in a friendly and professional atmosphere; and to conduct a productive research to shape the future of periodontics.
This discipline deals with diseases of the gums. It is one of the first clinical subjects the undergraduate encounters in the dental course. Through the lectures, tutorials and clinical sessions, undergraduates study about the normal and pathological tissues of the periodontium as well as the etiology and classification of gingival and periodontal disease. Students in their third year treat patients with periodontal problems and are also given the opportunity to perform simple periodontal surgical procedures.
